After having booked the stops for our final adventure in Botswana, we did some groceries. We had to buy food and drinks for about 3 days, as we were heading into the bush. Calling it an early night and we were ready for the final days in Botswana!
Out first stop would be Moremi Game reserve. We had booked a campsite at Xakanaxa campsites. The drive would be around 4 hours, but we still wanted to leave early in the morning. We had ordered our breakfast at Sitatunga camp the night before (some Rolex, which we remembered from our time in Uganda) and broke up camp. We had already expected the rolex to be ready a little later than promised, so we were still on our schedule.
The first part of the road was quite good, but it quickly turned into the pothole-party we know. Not a big problem, we just drove a little slower and kept going. From potholes the road turned into a corrugated gravel road, so we just had to go even a little slower. Our ETA slowly became later with every minute that passed, but we had enough time. Then we suddenly saw a chameleon on the road! In many African cultures that means good fortune during the travels, so our spirits lifted (it is also just a wonderful animal to see). As we were looking at the chameleon, and elephant passed. It stopped on the road, looked at us as if to welcome us to this part of the Okavango, and continued on its way.

Just after the elephant, we turned from the main road into the road that would take us to the Moremi Game reserve. The total drive took us longer than the indicated 4 hours, but on the way we enjoyed the scenery, until we suddenly got the sighting we were hoping for in Botswana!

A few elephants crossed the roads, including some small babies. We stopped, while giving them more than enough space and watched them pass the road. We looked to our right, to our left and behind us. The elephants were all around us. We had never seen such a big herd and it was truly mesmerizing. Botswana is well-known for having vast numbers of elephants, but so far we hadn't seen a lot. This really made up for it. The elephants seemed to come from everywhere and the line of elephants crossing the road didn't seem to end. We looked in awe for some time and continued just when a few ellies left some room for us to pass. After we had left, we saw more cross the road behind us. We still weren't even inside the park.

We arrived at the gate with no troubles and checked in, mentioning where we would stay, how long we would stay and where we would go next. Everything went quite quickly at the gate and we could enter the park without any issues. We continued the road to our campsite and loved the beauty of Moremi. We did not see a lot of game, as it was mid-day, but we loved the scenery. With our new best friend Tracks4Africa (could have used that on several occasions during our first trip), we easily found our campsite. We decided not to go anywhere that day. We did not feel the need to do any game drives, we just wanted to enjoy the beautiful campsite.

The campsite itself was not very special. It was a plot of grass under a large tree. It was just the setting that made it perfect for us. We had to walk quite a bit to get to the ablutions (across hippo and elephant roads), so we made sure we showered before dark. When we arrived at the campsite, we were also visited by some beautiful birds, who were very interested in Gigi. We loved to relax with the car, look at the birds and see how the squirrels ran from tree to tree. We had a wonderful bush dinner and went to the tent when the sun went down. Some sudokus and it was time to sleep, ready for our next day.
